Durian

                Durian, also known as the “King of the Fruits”, has a thorn-covered husk, a distinctive smell and sweet custard-like flesh. Durian is used to flavor a wide range of dishes and sweets in Thai cuisine and contains high amounts of energy, carbohydrates and fatty acids. 100 g of durian meat contains 181 kcal. Durian also contains useful amino acids and various vitamins. Its high sulfur content helps to strengthens fingernails make healthy hair and promote nice skin. The leaves can be boiled and placed in a bath to reduce fever. The boiled root taken orally as tea, is used to reduce fever and is also used to help stop diarrhea. 

                King of the Fruits is recognized by its wonderful and unique taste. The fruit has a hand spiked outer skin and contains cream colored and custard textured flesh inside. When ripe, the taste is sweet and buttery and also has a distinct fragrance.

                Durian is mostly eaten ripe as fresh fruit but can also be cooked in various dishes for the main course, side dishes, dessert and snacks. Durian can be grown in tropical areas, but the most delicious one can only be found in Thailand.

                The favorite varieties are Mon Thong, Chani, Kan Yao and Kradum Thong.

                A word of caution:  Because of its high energy and sulfur content, durian should not be eaten with alcohol. It is recommended that having mangoesteen after durian will lower the side-effects of durian’s high energy.
